My name is Evert den Hartog (1949), I was schooled to be a sculptor at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. In the years 1971-1976 my teachers of sculpture were Arie Teeuwisse, Bram Roth, Gijs Voskuil and others.
In the first years after my schooling I mainly made ceramic sculptures, until I decided to cast bronze sculptures with a colleague. By working in the bronze foundry I learned all the tricks of the trade.
The sculptures are presently cast at ART CASTING in Belgium.
My favourite subjects are people and animals in a wide variety.
Birds and bulls are animals which keep turning up in my work.
In the case of the birds the bronze seems to be weightless. The birds are balancing on one leg or are gliding freely in the air, connected only by the tip of their wings.
I am constantly looking for an "image" which freezes the moment of tension, so that the observer becomes aware of that particular moment.
An endless source of inspiration is my daughter Eline. I try to register her development in a way which we both agree on.
Themes such as swimming lessons (Eline with towel) and ballet (ballerina 1& 2) are some examples.
The adventures of the Greek god Zeus, who went out courting disguised as a bull or a swan, are also grateful subjects. I also like to use other themes from Greek mythology.
Humor is an element I like to add to my sculptures; it gives them an airy and natural look.
I carried out a lot of commissions and my statues were placed in Kobe (Japan), Dallas (USA), Jakarta and Antwerp.
In the Netherlands my sculptures can be found in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and many other places
